Embracing a Sustainable Future with Circular Cluster Collaborations

Skanem Group is pioneering sustainable innovation through its active involvement in the Circular Packaging Cluster (CPC), a cross-industry collaboration aiming to create the world's most efficient and circular value chain for packaging. This commitment to fostering eco-friendly packaging solutions is exemplified by Forestia's innovative case study, showcasing significant reductions in resource usage and CO2 emissions through alternative packaging methods.

Fostering Innovation and Knowledge Sharing in Sustainable Packaging

At Skanem Group, fostering innovation and sharing knowledge within sustainable packaging is at the forefront of our ongoing journey towards sustainability. This is why we are an active member of the Circular Packaging Cluster (CPC), a vital platform for collaboration, learning, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in creating eco-friendly packaging solutions.

The CPC is a cross-industry cluster collaboration dedicated to creating the world’s most efficient and circular value chain for packaging. It comprises 82 members, including industrial stakeholders, start-ups, researchers, academia, organizations, financers, and authorities, all contributing to tackling significant challenges with innovative ideas. We are also proud that the CPC board is led by our very own Group Director, Eirik Bergh.

Circular Resource Utilization in the Timber Industry

The Circular Packaging Cluster is currently engaged in an exciting project with the Norwegian Wood Cluster. This collaborative effort aims to drive innovation in sustainable construction solutions and packaging, emphasizing circular resource utilization and the packaging of wood materials in the timber industry.

One case study stands out among several innovative findings from the project, perfectly showcasing the importance of testing alternative packaging in perhaps unexpected areas to foster more circular solutions.

Forestia's Packaging Revolution: An Innovative Case Study

Forestia, a part of BYGGMA ASA, manufactures chipboards and delivers products to the Scandinavian and Northern European markets. Through a case study, Forestia has made significant strides by transitioning from using chipboards themselves to cardboard as their packaging solution. This change has dramatically reduced resource usage, CO2 emissions during transportation, and waste at construction sites.

Key Results:
  • 11.76 tons of CO2 equivalent saved in delivery transportation.

  • 747 tons of waste reduced on construction sites, alongside a decrease in waste transportation weight.

This strategic change allowed the chipboards to serve their primary purpose—being sold and used in construction rather than turning into waste after delivery. It's a prime example of how strategic changes can bring substantial environmental benefits.
